Michigan Casino Gambling Status & Launch

Online casinos in Michigan became legal following the passage of the Lawful Sports Betting Act. The law allows for the establishment of sportsbooks and online betting activities around the state. Retail casinos are eligible operate gaming websites if they so desire. As of 2021, online casinos and sports betting are fully legal and operational in Michigan.

Casinos that choose to operate Internet gambling will be subject to a $50,000 application fee, a $100,000 initial license fee, and a $50,000 annual fee. Each license is good for five years.

Those who supply casinos that offer Internet gaming will also need to be licensed. These operators will be subject to a $5,000 application fee, a $5,000 initial license fee, and a $2,500 annual fee.

The legislation creates what is known as the Internet Gaming Fund and requires fees and taxes to be paid into the fund. Online gaming would be taxed at between 20% and 28%, with the lowest rate applying to adjusted gross receipts below $4 million and the highest rate applying to adjusted gross receipts of $12 million or more. That tax rate is considerably higher than an earlier version of the legislation, which had a tax rate of 4% to 23%.

To allow for free play to encourage Internet gaming, the casinos would be able to deduct 10% from the gross receipts, which would otherwise be taxed, for the first three years, 6% in the fourth year, and 4% in the fifth year. After that, no allowance is made for free play.

What Can You Play Online?

The things that you can enjoy through an online casino in Michigan will include many of the same activities you’d find at traditional venues. The online casino experience would be ideal for those who don’t have easy access to one of these retail locations.

People can expect to find traditional slot machines and table games at online casinos. Multiple versions of blackjack, video poker, and roulette would be available.

Many online casinos also provide a live dealer option. These games provide interaction with an actual person serving as a dealer operating out of a closed-circuit location.

Other specialty games that you may find at an online casino may include virtual sports betting, bingo, and keno. The selection will vary by site. Leading online casino sites acquire software to operate their product from the top providers in the industry, so players can be assured that the games will be trustworthy and fair.

The majority of online casino sites are offered in conjunction with an online sports betting site, giving players the option to play at either site.

Most U.S. states that have legalized online casino wagering are taking their time to offer online poker rooms. In Michigan, one tribal casino and one Detroit casino have reached agreements with online poker providers.

The Odawa Casinos in Petoskey and Mackinac City will partner with PartyPoker. Meanwhile, PokerStars and the MGM Grand Detroit have reached a working agreement.

Online poker is now live in Michigan! PokerStars launched on Jan. 29, 2021.
