Online Poker in Michigan

Is it legal to play poker in Michigan?

In Michigan, it is legal to play poker games for real money online or at brick ‘n mortar casinos.

Land-based casinos in Detroit and around the state have been offering cash games and tournaments for a while. However, the first legal online poker sites should be launched in Michigan by the end of 2021.

In December 2019, the Lawful Internet Gaming Act was passed. This made it legal in Michigan to supply real money cash games and tournaments online.

When the first online poker sites launch, players will have to be aged 21 or over to play. They will also have to be physically located in Michigan to log into their accounts and join games.

Online poker sites will use geolocation tools to prevent players outside Michigan taking part. Poker players may also be denied access to the sites if their location can’t be verified.

Under the new MI gaming laws, brick ‘n mortar casinos can launch an online poker site. Casinos are only permitted one online gaming license each. And many of the tribal and commercial casinos have already signed partnerships with big online operators.

PokerStars will likely open a poker site in partnership with the Little Traverse Bay Bands of Odawa Indians. Little Traverse Bay operates cardrooms at some of their land-based casinos such as the Odawa Casino in Petoskey.

All three commercial casinos in Detroit have a cardroom, as do many of the tribal casinos in the state. MGM Grand has 20 tables running a selection of Limit and No Limit Texas Hold’em. Greektown Casino-Hotel, meanwhile, runs a 24-hour cardroom offering tournaments and cash games through the week.

Most tribal casinos in Michigan also run poker rooms. FireKeepers Casino in Battle Creek has 22 tables, while Soaring Eagle Casino in Mt. Pleasant and Gun Lake Casino have 14 tables. Tribal casino cardrooms offer a wide selection of Texas Hold’em and Omaha cash games and tournaments.

What casinos in Michigan have video poker machines?

If you’re a fan of poker, there are plenty of games to be had at Michigan casinos and card rooms. Video poker offers players the chance of a game against the computer, played on an electronic cabinet, much like a video slots game.

Unlike a game of Texas Hold’em, where the skill is to play your opponent, video poker is a very basic game. It is, though, a great option for players looking for a quick hit. It’s also ideal right now, whilst Michigan state’s poker rooms are closed, and online poker has yet to launch.

Equally, there are more venues across the state that offer video poker than have live poker action. For poker fans living out of reach of one of Michigan’s bigger tournaments, video poker offers a good chance of a regular game.

Pretty much anywhere you find a slots floor, you’ll find a host of video poker machines, too. For example, if you live in Michigan state’s Upper Peninsula, you’ll find plenty of video poker machines at the Ojibwa Casinos in Baraga and Marquette.

In Petowskey you’ll find a variety of video poker machines at the Odawa Casino. Betting ranges from low limits on the casino floor to dedicated high stakes machines in the High Limit Room.

Head further south and you’ll find a greater concentration of casinos offering video poker. In the state capital, Detroit, the large commercial casinos promise the widest variety of options on video poker and their stakes. Greektown Casino and the MGM Grand’s casino floor boasts 100s of video poker machines that range from 1 cent a game up to $100 a game.

Over to the south east of the state in Battle Creek, the Firekeeper’s Casino has an impressive range of video poker machines for players of all tastes. You can choose from All-Star Poker II, 50 or 100 Play Draw, Quick Quads or Super Times Pay poker, as well as many more.

Whatever your game preference, budget or location, you’re sure to find a video poker game that you can enjoy in Michigan state.
